Honiton Hot Pennies

Honiton Hot Pennies are thrown from the high windows of the High Street to the youngsters down below. A floral glove is erected for the week and the saying goes that no one can be arrested while the glove is up (however, the police ignore this bit)! This event dates back to the 13th century and is held on the first Tuesday after the 19th July at 12 noon. They were heated very hot in the old days, so as to scald the fingers of the poor, as the rich were amused by this. Today, thankfully, they are only warm.

Honiton Hill Rally

Honiton Hill Rally is held on the last weekend of August at the Smeatharpe Airfield. Vintage tractors, other machines of time gone by and all things vintage can be seen working. Country crafts, and demonstrations. This is a large event being held over two days, Sunday and Monday, after which there is a large auction.

Honiton Charter Day

Charter day is celebrated the Saturday before Hot Pennies. It is 760 years since Honiton was given its market Charter, which states that a market can be held on the High Street each week. For this event, people wear the costumes of 760 years ago to man the stalls.
