Moorland Guide Walking Festival

The first ever Dartmoor Walking Festival in 2016 was a great success and the very positive feedback really supported the idea of it becoming an annual event which is absolutely fabulous. Therefore Moorland Guides have held it again in 2017 and 2018 and the public voted with their feet – literally – and it seems that the festival is here to stay! The next festival will be held from Saturday 24th August until Sunday 1st September 2019 inclusive which means that this will be the last bank holiday week of the summer. In 2019 we are teaming-up with the National Disabled Ramblers who have seen what 2018 successes were like. Walks are being prepared by the guides at the moment so keep an eye on this page for updates and information about what is becoming one of the leading walking festivals.

Tavistock Goose Fair

The annual Goose Fair in Tavistock dates back to the early 12th Century, when a Michaelmas Fair held every September 29th provided the opportunity for business and animal trading, and was a social event for wives and daughters. The name Goose Fair probably came about as farmers brought their geese ready for fattening for Christmas, and the only other Goose Fair (in Nottingham) has a similar connection. When the new calendar was introduced in 1752 the 'loss' of 11 days changed the date of the Michaelmas Fair to October 10th, and now the Fair is held on the second Wednesday in October each year. Market traders come from all over the country to sell their wares and provide entertainment. Stalls and side shows are set up in the centre of the Town, and some 200 spaces are let by the Town Council for traders and community groups. A further 70 spaces in Bedford Car Park are let to members of the Showman's Guild by West Devon Borough Council with the car park being shut for the whole Goose Fair week. Please see the Stallholders Area page for more information on trading at Goose Fair. The more traditional side of Goose Fair can still be found at the Tavistock Livestock Centre. They usually hold an open day where you can see cattle, sheep and Dartmoor ponies, and enjoy the auction of live geese and poultry.

Honiton Hot Pennies

Honiton Hot Pennies are thrown from the high windows of the High Street to the youngsters down below. This event dates back to the 13th century and is held on the first Tuesday after the 19th July at 12 noon. They were heated very hot in the old days, so as to scald the fingers of the poor, as the rich were amused by this. Today, thankfully, they are only warm.
