Devon is, of course, wonderful in summer.
There are beaches to discover, coastal walks to enjoy, ice creams to eat and long evenings to spend outside. It’s the season when the county really comes alive.
But come September and October, Devon begins to change character.
The pace slows down.
The roads feel quieter. The beaches have more space. The countryside takes on new colours and there’s something wonderfully peaceful about exploring the county without the height-of-summer crowds.
It’s still Devon, just a little more relaxed.

One of the things we love most about autumn is simply being outside.
There’s something satisfying about pulling on a pair of walking boots and heading out into the countryside on a crisp morning.
The hedgerows are changing colour. Fallen leaves crunch beneath your feet. There might be a little mist sitting across the fields, or perhaps one of those beautiful clear autumn mornings where the sun makes everything glow.
And after a walk, there’s always the promise of somewhere warm and welcoming to stop for lunch.
A country pub. A farm shop. A café with something homemade.
Autumn days in Devon don’t need to be complicated.
- The coast feels different too
There’s a common idea that the Devon coast is only for summer.
We don’t think that’s true.
In autumn, the coastline has a completely different appeal.
There are still beautiful walks to enjoy, but without necessarily needing to find a spot for your towel. You can wander along the sand, breathe in the sea air, watch the waves and perhaps finish with a hot drink rather than an ice cream.
And on those bright autumn days when the sun does make an appearance, the combination of blue skies, golden countryside and the sea can be spectacular.
Sometimes, you might even have your favourite stretch of coast almost to yourself.

Perhaps this is the real reason we love autumn at the farms.
After a day spent exploring, there is nowhere else you need to be.
Come back from a walk. Take off your boots. Put the kettle on.
As the evenings draw in, the pace naturally slows.
There’s time for a good meal, a book, a board game or simply sitting together and talking about the day.
It’s the opposite of rushing from one thing to another.
And isn’t that what getting away is supposed to be about?

The changing season brings a change to the food on our tables too.
Apples begin to appear in the orchards. Local produce changes with the season. Farm shops fill with autumn flavours and menus become a little more comforting.
Think warm cakes, apple crumble, local cheeses, hearty lunches and, of course, Devon cider.
It’s a season that seems to encourage you to slow down and enjoy your food.
Perhaps that’s because everything tastes better after a good walk.

For now, we’re still enjoying every bit of summer.
There are still sunny days ahead. There are still beaches to visit, gardens to explore and long evenings to make the most of.
